Can my pet get lice?
Lice aren’t just a human problem. There’s a canine variety. Like fleas, these flat, gray, wingless parasites may be small, but they can make your dog miserable.
There are two types of canine lice:
(a) Chewing lice– Attach themselves to the base of the dogs hair. They like moist areas like ears, genitals, anus, and skin abrasions.
(b) Sucking lice– These like the dogs neck and shoulders and gorge themselves on blood.
The signs of lice often mimic a flea infestation but lice are more irritating. You can see them by pushing your pet’s hair around. They are slow moving and look like black specks of dirt with a clear lining around their bodies.
How to get rid of canine lice
First, wash all bedding, toys, crates, floors, and car seats. There are many products on the market you can apply to your dog. If you do not want to use medication try to do it naturally. Shaving, combing and bathing will eventually remove the lice manually. Bathe your dog with natural organic shampoo.
