Signs your pet has allergies
Allergies have become one of the most common health problems among pets. How can you detect if your pet is suffering from allergies? What could be causing your pet’s allergies? And are there natural remedies for pets with allergies?
Your pet may have allergies if he suffers from any of the following:
- excessive itching
- excessively licking
- chewing skin
- red, patchy skin
- rubbing against furniture or carpet
- hair loss
- gas, diarrhea, bloating
- open sores or scabs
- hot spots
- watery or gooey eyes
Types of pet allergies
Depending on the symptoms, your pet could be suffering from a food allergy or an environmental allergy. Once you determine the cause you will be better equipped to find a natural solution. Of course we always recommend consulting with your holistic veterinarian before making any health decision for your pet.
Food allergies
If your pet has food allergies, he may experience an allergic reaction in the form of gas, diarrhea, bloating, vomiting or most commonly, itching. (Think of a person who is allergic to milk or soy; they may experience symptoms such as severe bloating, gas, diarrhea, rash, etc.)
Environmental allergies
Your pet may have environmental allergies if he suffers from excessive itching, excessive licking, and watery or gooey eyes. This is a histamine reaction in response to airborne allergens such as pollen, mold, ragweed, grass, and dust mite feces. The same sort of reaction may also manifest itself if your pet is allergic to your laundry detergent, fabric softener, or is exposed to chemical cleaning products.
