Why every dog needs digestive enzymes
If you feed your dog kibble, canned, home cooked, or commercially processed “raw” foods, he needs digestive enzymes. While these types of foods can provide high quality nutrients for your dog, once the food is cooked or heated to a temperature above 118 degrees Fahrenheit, all of the digestive enzymes in the food will have been killed off. Dogs in the wild eat an all-raw diet so their digestive system is not capable of completely digesting cooked or processed foods. Fact: Unlike human saliva, a dog’s saliva does not contain any amylase (the enzyme that digests starches).
How enzymes work
Digestive enzymes are necessary to digest food and absorb all the nutrients within. Digestive enzymes begin working in the mouth and stomach to break down food. This makes the nutrients easier to absorb once the food reaches the intestines. When food is completely digested, the intestines are able to absorb nutrients from the food which in turn makes for a well nourished and healthy pet. Proper digestion not only supports proper elimination but it also supports healthy skin, coat, and allergies. Without the help of enzymes your dog’s pancreas has to work overtime to produce enzymes and your dog will have to eat more food just to get the basic nutrition he needs.
