What to feed your dog after exercise

All dogs need some amount of exercise to maintain a healthy weight and overall well-being. However, each time your dog gets exercise they are susceptible to exercise-induced inflammation and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). What can you do to ensure your pet gets the proper post-workout nutrients to support muscle soreness and repair?

Astaxanthin for muscle recovery and endurance

After each session of exercise, give your pet a snack full of protein, carbohydrates, and antioxidants. In one study, two groups of dogs were given a snack after exercise. The first group was given protein, carbs, and astaxanthin, while the second group was given protein and carbs alone. The group that was given the astaxanthin had a 4.1% drop in blood glucose levels while the group without astaxanthin had a 34% drop in blood glucose levels. This study shows that supplementing with the super antioxidant Astaxanthin can actually promote faster exercise recovery in dogs.

Antioxidant supplements for dogs

We recommend: Tri- KRILL™ Pump For Pets which contains 96mcg of astaxanthin per pump. Supplement with one measured pump for every 10 pounds of your pet’s body weight every day. This may be doubled for added support or on the advice of your veterinarian. *Pets with allergies to seafood shouldn’t use krill oil.
